poppy seed harvesting

hi, i had a beautiful summer display of poppies, which are now done flowering and looking ratty (shirley & opium/peony poppies). at what point must i wait to pull the plants to assure a good harvest of viable seed for sowing next year? i have a neigbor who pulls hers in the very green stage as soon as the last flower petal has dropped, then just throws the dead-headed pods in the garden for next year. i am used to waiting till the pod is brown before i pull them, but would love to do it earler. anybody have experience with how early you can do it? thanks
