Question on Russian Mammoth Sunflower

First time planting a sunflower, and I know I'm late on planting (put in ground June 20). I was wondering when the sunflower will get a head on it-will it just be a giant 6 foot stem and leaves then get the head, or will it start to grow the head around 2 or 3 feet as it continues to get bigger?

they grow to full height then put on a flower head. and 6 ft is a little one. Most of mine were 8 ft+ one was over 10ft

Bummer. Pretty sure I'm gonna end up with a giant stem filled with leaves, it's only about a foot now if even that. I don't think it will grow fast enough before frost. Oh well, now I know for next year.
