Hi all, newbie.....what type of poppy would you say was in the movie The Wizard of Oz?
Would like to plant some in a themed garden area but no idea about poppies. Any info?

Thanks very much everyone! :)

Most likely the opium kind, papaver somniferum. I know they have red kinds like in the movie. Or you could just get any other red poppy, if you're just going for looks. I'm unsure if it's really legal to grow somniferum...?? But it seems common practice.

Corn poppy is red too right? Do they all look similar when you plant the seeds from a pack or will there probably be other types like doubles or ones with white trim, etc. from the pack?

I can't remember what the poppies looked like in the movie. It's very unlikely that the movie company grew a whole field of p. somniferum. They probably used corn poppies, since the poppies in the movie weren't very tall.

You can get oriental poppies with that nice dark orange or red color.

which would you say are easier to germinate & grow -oriental reds or corn poppy reds. I live in FL so it's hot & humid much of the time but cool in fall/winter with some light frost. thanks!

I would think the Shirley poppy, or one called American Legion, or the Flanders Field poppy. Easily grown and available in the straight scarlet color. Al

Thanks Al, I am guessing I can find a pkt of either of those in Lowes or Walmart, hopefully-if they haven't gotten all the seed racks down yet. LOL :)
