 o
Prunus Serrulata (Japanese Cherry Blossom) from seed

I have been eager to start a Prunus Serrulata tree from seed. I have gotten seeds from several different sellers online, but i haven't had any luck with them. If I don't know the exact freshness of the seed and whether they have been put through a hot and cold period yet, how will I know where to start? All seeds I've tried to stratify or just sow have rotted. I've researched it time and time again, but I've found several sets of instructions. It appears my options are to cold stratify in either a wet towel or moist soil for a certain period of time before planting (tried), just plant (tried), or introduce seeds to a certain period of warm before stratifying (currently trying). Does anyone know anything about these seeds or has anyone had any luck germinating them previously? Thanks in advance for your time. :)

The only other method you could try is to treat your seeds with gibberellin. We were going to try this experiment in class but never got around to actually doing it. However, I don't know how feasible it is for you to find gibberellins.

A much more feasible solution for your problem is grafting. This will only work if you know somebody who can give you a fresh cutting. You can germinate regular cherry seeds and graft a scion of Prunus serrulata onto it. This has to be done when the plant is about to break its winter dormancy. I'm assuming that these two species are related enough for the graft to take. For this reason, it is not advisable to use other members of the genus Prunus, such as peaches or apricots, as rootstock because of genetic dissimilarity.
