| I planted a bunch of seeds, odds and ends, the other day (I know what time of year it is, I'll be growing them inside) and I'm astonished how many have already sprouted: dill, basil, chives, lavender, two chiles. My question is this: the sprouts are VERY long, over an inch. What should I do now? They're just long sprouts with the dicotyledons (?) on them.
Do I replant them deeper? Wait until the true leaves come out? I'd really love not to lose all these guys. Thanks. |

| They need more light...they are stretching to reach for it. What are you using for light? If you don't have a very sunny window, you'll need to supplement with artificial, ie, grow lights or fluorescent lights, and keep the seedlings quite close to the light...just a few inches away. A small fan blowing gently on them will also help them 'sturdy up', but mostly they need the light. HTH |

| Thanks. I thought it might be the light, but they sprang up so fast that they caught me napping. I've got them in a southwest-facing window that gets very good light all year round, so we'll see what happens. Don't think I can do the fan yet. Still getting them used to not being in a closed environment. |

| Light from a window may seem like good light compared to the rest of the light in the house, but compared to "outside" it is weak and all to one side. Also the window glass is a poor insulator and within a few inches of the glass the air temperature is considerably cooler. Al |
