Rockwool, Rapid Rooter, Bio-Dome Plugs

I like the germination rates of the RR but at $20 for 50 of them, they are quite pricey if one is doing lots (hundreds) of plants. Someone suggested the refill sponges for Park Seed's Bio-Domes. They are similar to rapid rooter but much less expensive. 120 of them for $11. They fit into the Speedling 200-cell seedling tray and I have had excellent germination results with basil and tomatoes.

This is good because getting 3,000 seedlings to grow large enough to transplant would take up a lot of room, especially if I use 36- or even 72-cell nursery flats. These Speedling trays are about 11x22" and hold 200 plants. I can fit 15 trays in one row of my greenhouse.

Of course, the proof will be if the plants grow healthy!

An update - roots love, I mean adore and thrive in the plugs. They need to be watered daily or maybe grow in a trough filled with water. I moved my basil plants to an aeroponics container and they have also responded quite well. I just wish I could find something similar but less expensive.

My search has not ended - I keep looking for the least expensive/most efficient medium to start literally 3000+ seeds in. I ran across this which seems like it may work. Found a place where I could buy a single tray to experiment with. I'll let you know the results!

Here's what the tomato seedling look a bit after three weeks.

None of the plants are over two inches tall!

Hi there! Not sure if this post will even be checked because it has been a couple years since the last post but I am curious as to what was used to grow the tomatoes in the pic and what you possibly use at this time. What is the best and cheapest way to go I would LOVE to know. Thanks for any info. Jolene
