Seedlings going to sleep?!

Hi there -
I'm very, o' wait, EXTREMELY new to the world of plants and flowers and well.... I have recently started some seeds (18 Oct) and they germinated within 2-3 days (20/21 Oct) and now it's 8 days later and they are about 3/4" tall -- doing alright - something in between the 'starter' leaves is STARTING to appear -- BUT the seedlings seem to go to sleep at night! I still have the two 'starter' leaves and at night, when I shut off the light the leaves close up! So when I go out there in the morning and turn on the light, they are all closed up and then after the light has been on a few minutes they open right up! WEIRD. Is this NORMAL though?! These particular seeds that I sowed are for the sensitive plant, the leaves actually move away when you touch them after the seedlings mature. I am sorry, but I do not know the more scientific name of this particular plant. But could that be causing the 'starter' leaves to close up at night as well? Stats on the setup that I have are (3) 3" peat pots filled 3/4 of the way with Miracle Gro Seed Starter Mix (the mix I used w/ these seeds came from a new bag) and I sowed (3) seeds in each pot. Each pot has (2) seedlings with one pot having (3). They get a minimum of 16 hrs of fake light a day. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have read through various sites and books and I have not been able to reference anything on this particular phenomenon. By the way, these plants are going to be strictly indoor plants only.
Thank you again!

Tiffany, sensitive plant Mimosa pudica folds up its foliage, remains "closed" at night. I haven't grown it from seed to know that the seed leaves exhibit that too but apparently they do. Normal, and no cause for concern.

Tiffany, I need your advise . I bought the sensitive mimosa pudica seed on ebay, but no planting instruction . How do you germinated mimosa seed in a couple of day to sprout seeds?thanks |

Mimosa pudica leaves will exhibit their 'sensitivity' beginning with their true leaves, meaning those first leaves (the round ones) shouldn't be sensitive. in any case, yes, the seedlings will be sensitive. Cold, dark, and touch can cause the leaves to fold.

Hi there BonBon- I used the following setup : 3-3" peat pots with Miracle Gro Seed Starter mix and put them all in baggies and sealed it up on the 18th of Oct (Sunday) - then I checked on the 20th and two pots had germinated and then on the 21st, the third pot germinated. I put 3 seeds in each peat pot, and the soil was fairly moist -- opened up the baggies on the the dates they germinated and took them out of the baggies by that Friday and they have been growing slowly since. I use a spray bottle now to water them so I don't disturb them or else I have them in the a cookie sheet, so filling the cookie sheet with water also works well. I did lose one of the seedlings, which is wicked sad, but I was told that may happen. So out of the 9 seeds, 7 germinated and 6 are viable so far. I sincerely believe that eBay has issues when it comes to *some* seeds, I have purchased from eBay and NO luck at all getting almost 15 seeds to germinate. I used the peat pots and then also the wet coffee filter in a baggie - and NONE of the seeds germinated. Those were lavender seeds. I'm no expert at all, but that whole lot of seeds from eBay just didn't do much! I have had the mimosa pudica under grow lights since they germinated too. It's a jerry-rig setup, but it seems to be working. Didn't want to go ALL out at first, but I am thinking about getting a small specially made grow light now though. And after reading, I am not a huge advocate for placing seedlings in the window either-the manufactured light is far better. Also the temperature just gets too cold at night here, so I am playing it safe on all fronts. If you have any specific questions - I will be more then willing to answer - but this really is my first time at the rodeo as they say here in Texas. O' yeah - several cups of coffee seems to help too! The link I have included has pics of the seedlings last night. -tiffany

Quick update!! Wow, my eBay seeds have germinated! Day 7 and they are JUST starting to show themselves although the seedling leaves are the size of a dot on a piece of paper - but you can see the green!! So I have opened up my baggie for these guys. Wow. Sorry - still *very* new to this stuff! But this is certainly exciting for me! :-) -tiffany

Tiffany, just so you know :) Lavender, depending on which one you sowed, can be erratic and take any where from 3 weeks to 3 months to germinate. Sometimes giving the seed pots a moist chill of 2-4 weeks can help.
