seed soak

Has anyone heard of soaking seeds for 30 minutes in beer before planting? My neighbor always gives me, what sounds like, wierd advice but his garden is always nice.
He says it gives the veggies a little bit of a kick start.
something else he says he does it mix in a little coca cola into the planting mix.

I am telling you, it sounds so strange.

Beer and Coke would give me a kick start too. It would be fun to try an experiment with water on one, beer and cola, and see what works the best. I wonder if it is just softening the seed coat with any liquid that would help. I usually soak most of my larger seeds at least overnight.

Another method I use is soaking the seeds in boiling water. I dont boil the seeds. Just pour the hot water over them and soak as usual. This works well with really hard seeds. Particularly Senna alata. Ive done it with morning glory and nasturtium as well. I do know that plants love flat beer. So there might be some logic in there. Thanks for your info!

Sounds like the neighbor has a book by Jerry Backer. He uses a lot of coke and beer in his stuff. I have on upstairs I guess I better actually read it. LOL
