| Hi all,
I live in florida but inland so in the winter I can't start any seeds outside. I'd like to start some inside and once they start sit the pots out during the afternoons.
What's the basics that I need to germinate in a chilly house? Do I just need bottom heat? Or will I also need more light than the sun can give in the winter?
Also could you please give me a good site to purchase what I would need? Thank you so much.

I start some of mine under a homemade light stand made to fit on top of my fridge. I used 2 two foot flourescent fixtures hooked to a timer and hung them from a frame made of 2x4's. It stays warmer up that high since the heat in the room rises and I get some heat from off the fridge too, also it is really out of the way.

I built a light stand with 4' shop lights on the bottom for bottom heat and 4' lights above that for light. I just cover the bottom lights with cardboard and they work great for bottom heat. I set my flats right on the cardboard.

The cheapest way for me is to start my seeds on top of my water heater. It's in the bathroom closet, and very easy to use. If the seed you're starting is sown below the soil, then this is ideal. If the seed needs to be sown on top of the soil, then it needs light to germinate. As soon as I see growth, I transfer them to a window or under lights. It mostly depends on how many plants your'e wanting. I've found that if I use peat pots or individual container, it's best to put them in a plastic shoe box and close them up to help keep them moist. You'll need to check on them often and not let them dry out. Hope this helps.

Plastic deli containers on hot water heater or your router for your home network. I leave my main PC on almost always and it is quite warm there as well.

I second what lindalana said; check out the Winter Sowing FAQ. You can sow seeds without grow lights or any expensive set up. And it is so much easier, carefree and worry free.
