| Hello all
I want to try onions from seed. I have been doing tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, broccoli, and all sorts of things from seed. Just wondering if onions are the same process, seed starting mix then move to potting soil then harden off & then to the garden. Thanks Ed |

| Same process basically but usually started much earlier than other things since they go into the garden so much sooner and keep them trimmed to about 3" tall till transplant to the garden time. I linked some previous discussions on growing them below if you want to read them. Dave |

| I grew green bunching onions from seed last year (first time) using the winter sowing method. I found the method extremely easy and no hardening off was required. A gallon milk jug, some potting mix, water, a knife and duct tape are all that is needed to build the mini greenhouse. I plan to do some again soon for 2010 using the winter sow method again. |

| How many hours of light do they need? |

| I grew onions from seed this past season. It was easy, satisfying and the onions were fine--but not remarkably different from what I get from the store. If you have a lot of space for a veggie garden, it might be worth it. For me, it's back to leeks, which are more expensive to buy so more worth it to me to grow. If I do grow onions again, I'll probably try a different variety--not standard yellow onions. I started mine indoors under lights, probably in February. Pretty much like most other vegetables, except that they can go out earlier than tender things. |
