planting under pine trees

What can I plant under pine trees to screen an area from a roadway. The trees have been limbed up quite high, the soil is on the dry side, there is plenty of morning to noon light but it is partly shaded in the afternoon. I don't need a heavy screen, just something to kind of mark a boundary. I don't particularly want evergreens.

Maybe azaleas? You might get more responses over on the "discussion" side of the forum, though.

Good luck!

I know that currants do well mixed with Pines. They are natural neighbors in the wild, don't compete for water and share nutrients more readily.... I have them mixed together in our work gardens so it looks like a native setting....
