Boxwood help

I browsed through the forum looking for a solution, but honestly I just don't know how to describe my problem. I've decided to do something about the shrubs in the front of my new home... it seems they're boxwoods... I know nothing more than that. They're very brittle... almost impossible to cut with my hedgetrimmer. It seems they've grown together.. just the tips are green the rest looks like dead branches. Any advice on what to do would be great..

I couldn't get the pics to upload so here's a link..
