o it to late for my lilac

Planted my lilac 11 years ago. Yesterday while outside I noticed the inside trunks of my lilac were dead. I pushed on them and they came out of the ground. They were rotted. I took 4 of the major trunks out of the ground. I'll post pictures later so anyone looking gets a better idea of what I'm talking about.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi sewigardnut,

Lilacs, like many shrubs should be pruned some each year, cutting out the oldest of trunks. I would suggest that you take 1/3 of the oldest woodiest branches down to ground level for the next 3 years, and then just maintain it each year after that, removing the oldest stuff, and anything that crosses or is too thick.
