| My three huge weigelas have NOT lost their leaves yet and it is almost February.
We've had temps as low as 15 several mornings and very cold days here in NC - yet no leaves have fallen off. They are brown, they are crispy but they are still hanging on. Silly - but could I just run my hands through the stems and eliminate them, or do I just leave them alone for fear of disturbing any possible buds forming. New to weigelas - third year thanks - Carrie |

| how are you new to weigelas .. yet have HUGE ones .... in 3 years ... ??? do you fertilize these shrubs???? have they flowers properly???? need some more facts ... to get to the heart of the problem ... right now.. i am suspecting that they did not harden off properly in fall .. which might have happened due to late heavy fertilization??? ... but it is a total guess at this time ... i would ignore it .. rather than mess with trying to brush off the old .... shrubs are rather able to take care of themselves.. if we dont try to love them to death ... more facts please ... ken |

| They are possibly four years (not three) and stems are just about six feet tall - filled with brown leaves. I didn't use any fertilizer, so it can't be that. Not sure what it is - but not overly worried - I know the leaves have to fall off sometime - I just thought it was odd. Thanks Carrie |

| My vareigated Weigelas occasionally hang onto their leaves. This year we have record lows early in the season so it hung on to more than usual this year. Its mainly an element of temps. before dormancy. |

| if you did NOT hyper-fertilize.. causing them to be flushing green growth too late in the season... then it was PROBABLY just that you had a cold snap early .. that made them hold on ... it might be a curiosity to go to weather underground.. and see if there were any cold snaps during the fall .. which you forgot about ... best advise .. ignore them ... they will probably fall off when the new buds burst in spring ... ken |
