Replacement shrub with same dimensions as Pennisetum 'Karley Rose

I'm looking for a replacement shrub for Pennisetum 'Karley Rose', which now marks either side of the entrance to a patio. I really like the Pennisetum, but it requires dividing every other year to maintain its size and is too messy to be an attractive fixture much beyond the growing season.

The hard part here is that site is in part sun (5 hrs/day) and can get quite moist during the winter and spring because the patio slopes in this direction.

I need something with the same general height and space requirements as the Pennisetum and was thinking about a dwarf Ilex vomitoria, which can tolerate both dry and moist conditions.

Do you have any other suggestions or can you comment on how you think the dwarf Ilex vomitoria would work?

Eh, it's been a week. I'll let this question die a natural death.

I was going to suggest a landscape rose, but you might not have enough sun.

Have you considered another grass, such as blue oat grass or a Deschampsia? Neither require a huge amount of sun and the blue oat grass is evergreen.

I am surprised that you thought the Pennisetum to be messy. It does like a lot of sun, so maybe its related to that.

What about one of the smaller Kalmias? Or perhaps even a small rhododendron?

I want to say Clethra 'Hummingbird' but not sure if it will get a little larger. It does like the moisture and is happy in that amount of sun. Has frag*rance, great foliage. I know they also have 'Sixteen Candles' which is supposed to be smaller but I heard it ends up, it is the same size. Not sure what is true there.

Hey spazzycat~I don't know about the dwarf Ilex vomitoria, NC State says it can grow 5'H x 5'W! You could try Thuja occidentalis 'Bobozam', "Mr. Bowling Ball", a globe arborvitae. It is the cutest little evergreen, stays in a neat little ball, has soft feathery foliage.
