I lost 3 boxwoods that died to the ground last winter and none sprouted any new growth this spring. Wait and see if it were my choice since there are so many but being proactive now would give whatever you planted a head start.

As far as how hard it will be to take them out... that all depends on how long they have been in the ground and how well they were able to root in. My 3 small shrubs had a stunning amount of roots and were actually quite difficult for the size to dig out with a shovel. They were probably 2.5-3' tall and had been in the ground about a 1.5 yrs.

on my 5 acres.. i would cut them flush to the ground.. apply generic round up or stump killer.. cover it all with some mulch .... and move on with life .. and go plant things somewhere else ...

are you stuck on a small lot where you need that specific space.. or do you just like hard manual labor involving large machines???

just like this morning's toast, they are burnt to a crisp.

but there is a chance they may recover. Prune them back, provide water, and a half rate of miracle-gro (one of the few good uses for the stuff).
