Wanted- Calycanthus Floridus - Summer Sweet Shrub

Hi-
I'm dying to get my hands on the very fragrant Calycanthus Floridus- also known Carolina Allspice, or Summer Sweet Shrub. I've tried 2 yrs. in a row to grow it- the first year from seed, the squirrels ate it, the 2nd year they didn't make it. Would anyone have some starts (rooted cuttings) or seeds (I'll try it again!) I'd be thrilled to pay postage for seeds or plants. I do have very fragrant Brugmansia cuttings & plants (Angel's Trumpets that I started from cuttings in the fall) that I could trade for. Please contact me if interested!
Thanks!

Bluestone also carries it.

I would be happy to root you some cuttings, but my shrub is one of those that has absolutely no fragrance at all. It is beautiful and flowers very nicely, but no scent.

If you look for it online or in the nurseries, try to get assurance that it will be fragrant. Some are and some aren't.

Yes: Always buy specimens of known pleasant smell etc. Stock offered here usually has dinky, sour flowers.

Since scent can be subjective, the secret is to buy it in flower, so you know that you've got one that appeals to you!

Okay, I just wanted to clear up the mystery of why this plant sometimes is and sometimes isn't fragrant. The scent is stronger when it's humid out. If there's not a lot of humidity, the scent won't be as strong.

My sense of smell is very sensitive, and I can tell you that my Calycanthus has no fragrance at all, regardless of the humidity level.

My shrub is mature -- maybe 8ft high now -- and each year I sniff and sniff at those blooms hoping for a whiff of what everyone says is heavenly. But each year, alas, nothing.

I still love it though -- the blooms are cool as hell, and the foliage is always crisp and clean.

Some plants are fragrant and some are not. For those that ARE fragrant, humidity may intensify the fragrance. But if an individual plant is not fragrant, nothing will make it so.

'Michael Lindsey' is a cultivar that is known to be fragrant. Wild ones are just hit and miss.

I used to work in a plant nursery and every year we'd get in a bunch Calycanthus from a wholesaler in CA and they were all grown by cuttings so they were all clones and none of them had any fragrance. I guess the source plant they were using was one that lacked fragrance.
The yellow flowered cultivar 'Athens' is very fragrant. The regular species is hit and miss.

I love "Athens". To my nose, it smells just like cantaloupes. The yellow-green flowers also stand out in the landscape a lot more than the regular brownish ones. I also have Michael Lindsay which smells great but has a more "typical" appley kind of smell.
