Have your wintersweet plants bloomed yet??

Ok, I don't really know that much about this plant, but from what I understand, they usually bloom sometime in early winter (usually in January or February). I was just wondering if your plants have bloomed yet. Also, did anyone save seeds from their shrubs by any chance?? I was thinking about trying to grow one this year (in a protected spot).

Yes, mine started blooming a couple weeks ago. I'm on the edge of it's hardiness range, so I honestly don't think you should invest a lot of time trying to get one established from seed. You might get a year or 2's growth, but may loose it to a bad winter, like this one. So you'll have wasted all that time.

Why not get a Hamamelis mollis, Chinese witch hazel. It's hardy to z5. It's fragrant too. Pic.

Rare Find Nursery in Jackson, NJ just had their witch hazel open house last weekend. They have enough varieties of Hamamelis, including 4 mollis, to make you swoon

Mine were blooming at Christmas. I took some to my grandmother's house for everyone to enjoy. Yes the witch hazels are fragrant but not 1 tenth as fragrant as the wintersweet. I agree though that you shouldn't raise from seed. They take years to bloom. Might as well pay for one that'll bloom sooner then collect seeds while having one you can enjoy now!
