As with any broadleaved evergreen, older, interior foliage will eventually yellow and fall off. If it becomes a heavy or more widespread problem, I'd suspect some sort of root issue (too deeply planted, poor drainage, insufficient soil moisture, etc.). Soil acidity or lack thereof will generally manifest itself with different symptoms.

Ok, it's not planted too deeply, the drainage is average, but it is near a Maple, so it could be I need to step up the watering. It was later in the summer when it gets drier that it was starting to yellow. The Maples really suck moisture out of the soil and it's not easy sometimes to keep that area from drying out.

gal said: Soil acidity or lack thereof will generally manifest itself with different symptoms. =- what she meant was that the whole plant would be affected.. not 4 errant leaves .... yes??? another theory would be to ask if those few leaves were somehow injured during planting or transportation ... when was it planted ... the remaining leaves look great.. so i also do NOT suspect watering.. or frankly.. any cultural problem... said things effect the entire plant ... i think that is the key ken

It was planted in the fall of 2008, and looked very good up until this photo was taken in late summer. I am enjoying the Pieris and hope they will grow well for me. Good to know that the whole plant would be effected if it were cultural problems so you know when to worry. Thanks Ken and Gardengal. :-)
