Does anyone know of a website that has the capability of allowing the user to list all the requirements they have for a shrub, and then the website generating a list of shrubs that meet the listed requirements? I want to plant a screen to conceal an unsightly fence belonging to a neighbor, but there are so many requirements, i.e., shade, evergreen, deer-resistant, at least 6-feet tall, etc.

I have bookmarks for many that I have come across over the years, but they all have been pretty lacking. Either they don't filter enough or they don't have a large enough database or they group too generally or too specifically or they have incorrect info (e.g. zone). It should be easy, but it is actually a challenging programmatic task because many plants may do well in multiple conditions, e.g. tolerant of moist or dry soil, part-shade or full-sun... so if you are looking for "average soil" plants or "part-shade", you will get a huge list that needs more filtering. If you have specific requirments (e.g. moist, shade), you will do better *IF* the database is big enough and the search algorithms smart enough. Will it identify plants that like "moist well-drained" soil? I hate that term. My "moist" area is hardly well-drained or it wouldn't be moist! So keeping in mind the pitfalls of these tools, here's one to look at but you should only consider it a starting point and do more research. http://www.finegardening.com/PlantGuide/PlantFinder.aspx Agree with Ken, it is much better to use us.

Here are some links. I don't use these often enough to remember which one does what, but have found them all useful at one point or another. Missouri Botanical Garden's Plantfinder. If nothing shows up for a search, just tweak the criteria a bit. University of Connecticut's Plant Selector lets you search by deer resistance. Monrovia's Plant Catalog also lets you search by deer resistance. Landscape USA's Plant Encyclopedia. I haven't used this very often, and as I remember it's rather iffy (I don't remember why).
