foundation ideas

I am looking for ideas for something to plant along the northeast side of my cottage. I am situated in northeastern NC on the shores of Currituck Sound, so the northeast side is exposed to cold and wind and some salt air. The cottage is on piles and about three feet off the ground, with lattice from ground to wall. Does anyone have any suggestions for something to plant along here that would be evergreen, dense, not too high (3-4 feet) and not too wide, as there isn't much room between the house and the boundary line. Something with an upright aspect would be best. I don't mind pruning to keep outward growth in check, but not to shape (no meatballs)! I look forward to any suggestions that you all may have. Thanks. PS The soil is sandy/clay, but I amend any hole I dig. Good drainage, also.
