6'-10' Hedge

Looking for some options on shrubs for a 6'-10' hedge in zone 4 full sun. Lilacs fit the bill but we are tired of them. We have a fair list but looking for more ideas. The hedge will be over 250 feet in length on both sides of the property and we want to mix things up to break up the monotony. We are also looking for at least some degree of windbreak from the hedge

Is your soil alkaline? Among the large shrubs that would do well on alkaline soil are the ninebarks (Physocarpus), a number of cultivars available; some viburnums, perhaps V. lantana and crosses with lantana in the parentage. Tossing a few conifers into the shrub border will help keep it interesting.

you might want to contact your county soil conservation district .... a 250 foot wind break.. by definition is soil conservation ....

they have annual sales of plants.. which you may have missed.

but i would not miss the opportunity to talk with local experts..

Is winter windbreak protection important? If so, that could narrow it down to evergreens rather fast.

Richard.
