i usually go with weather.. before i start wondering about the soil changing itself to the detriment of a plant that has been there any length of time ..

how long has it been there

how big is it..

any out of the ordinary winter weather.. like a cold snap any time since november ..???

Excessive sunlight exposure can also give this appearance. New plantings on the south and west side of a house can show this as well as garden setting plantings that have shade trees removed therefore allowing more sunlight in.

But we need to know all of what Ken asked, too.
