| I was wondering if anyone has any advice for choosing the type of trees to plant to make my hedge fence.
• Purpose is to reduce traffic noise (3-5 M tall)
Would be nice to be a native that attracts birds, but not essential, reducing noise and having tidy roots much more important. If you have any ideas pls help me…. As I have no idea :)

| If your primary purpose is to reduce noise, then I think you are going to be disappointed. Plants have very little ability to deflect noise, even if very thickly planted. The only effective noise barrier is a solid wall and of pretty good height as well. You might want to consider some sort of noise distraction - a fountain or other water feature, plants like bamboo that will create their own sound when the breeze blows, etc. This topic comes up from time to time on the Landscape Design forum. You may want to check there for previous posts discussing this issue. Not sure what shrubs may work best as hedges for your location - Australian plants are not all that adaptable to much of the US :-). Have you posted this in the Australia forums? |

| In the UK there are companies that specialise in noise reduction fencing (of the timber variety!). This in combination with shrubs/hedges could help - especially if you are looking for something that tall. The company below don't say they supply worldwide but I am sure you could find a similar product in Australia on the Google machine! |
