Purchased a home and want to add some shrubs. Would like suggestiions for shrubs to plant on both sides of the steps going up to the porch. Thinking of something with some height but not to high. Home has western exposure. Thinking of adding nandinas to the shrub area and geranims on front porch. House is paint pale yellow with white trim.

RE: Shrubs

There are so many available. Two rather trouble free, among dozens possible, are Berberis, with William Penn a good evergreen choice, and some dwarf form of Fothergilla.
Check out some place like Forest Farm, on line. Might make your head spin, with all the choices.
Many States have colleges and universities that feature gardening suggestions and lists locally valuable.

RE: Shrubs

i cant provide ideas.. w/o a pic of the spot ...

otherwise.. whatever whim you have will do ...

RE: Shrubs

How much sun does the area get and is it morning sun or afternoon sun?

RE: Shrubs

>some height but not to high<

How high is that? 10 feet? 8 feet? 5 feet? 3 feet?

Are you thinking of one plant on either side of the steps?

Full sun, part sun, shade? How hot does it get in that spot in summer? Cooking hot?

Do you want it evergreen?

RE: Shrubs

Rarely in this forum. However if suitable soil my first thought is Fothergilla or Beautyberry. The former especially, since you get flowers, nice summer foliage, and fall color. Blue Shadow Fothergilla, has exceptional summer color as well.

As for source, mosey on over to Pine Ridge Gardens. You won't regret it. They are located near Russellville Arkansas. So easy, and relatively inexpensive shipping, with good plants. You will pay out the #$# on shipping from Forest Farm.
