Kumson Forsythia?

Last year in the late spring/early summer I bought a couple of Kumson Forsythia. I've never had forsythia before but have long admired them, and this variety was so nice looking with its variegated foilage, and they supposedly don't get quite as large either (4'-6').

I relocated them the other day, and lost a branch in the process so I brought it inside to see if I could force blooms. I have gotten only about four blooms, and the rest just came out as leaves. Looks very healthy, but not covered with blooms they way I would imagine.

The shrubs outside still haven't done much, just lots of buds. I am hoping that they will put on a little better bloom show than the branch I brought inside. I was just wondering, is it typical for young forsythia not to bloom as much until they get a little more mature? Like I said, never had one before so not sure what to expect.

Thanks!

Always risky to generalize on the basis of a single plant, but my experience with Kumson is that it does not bloom as extravagantly as other forsythia cultivars. That said, most forsythias are pretty boring for the 51 weeks out of 52 when they're not in bloom. The unusual leaf variegation in Kumson more than makes up for the lesser flowering. Incidentally, I've found Kumson to root very, very easily. Long shoots that touch the ground will be well rooted by the end of summmer as long as the soil has remained moist.

no matter what plant ... i NEVER expect a show the first year after planting.. in most cases.. it simply is not ESTABLISHED to put out the big show.. whatever that may be ... i am usually just thrilled if it leafs out ...lol ..

and surely .. transplanting it again didnt help ...

they root freely.. so you will probably get another one ... if the broken one is still in vase ...

in my z5.. they are terribly susceptible to killing of the buds ... never figured out if it was a fall problem.. or a winter kill ... but out here in the country.. forsythia are variable in how nice the bloom is any given spring..

in the city... i never noticed that problem ... so MAYBE a winter wind issue ... or an early winter freeze.. before the plant is hardened off to said circ's ... its a forsythia.. i never really cared to research it.. lol ...

bottom line.. i would give them another year or two.. to get fully established .... before i would come to any conclusions about the ultimate ability of them to bloom ...

did you have .... in your zone.. any .. out of normal extreme temp swings that you can recall??? .. like that wild week when all the citrus and veggie producers further south of you lost crops????

RE: Kumson Forsythia?

Thanks to both of you for your replies. Very helpful. It is good to know that I may not get the show of some other Forsythias as far as flowers, but I suppose I will wait and give it a year or two before I really pass judgement. :) I appreciate your thoughts as someone who has grown it, mainegrower!

I had layered one of them last year (and then forgot when I dug it up), so I have one little planlet from that. I did end up sticking a few of the cuttings off the branch in the water.

I looked at them again last night, and they may be putting on a few more blooms. Maybe I am just being too impatient. :p
