It's impossible to say weather some fertilizer would help, without a soil test or knowing more about the situation. And, I wouldn't fertilize unless there was a reason to think that that would be beneficial. A topdressing of compost probably would be a wonderful thing.

Boxwoods respond well to pruning. We might be able to tell you more about pruning if we knew what your goals were or were able to see the shrubs. Are you dealing with larger or overgrown boxwoods or simply wanting to keep smaller ones "well-manicured"?

Can't believe I missed wishing everyone "Happy Easter" Thank you for replying so quickly. The ones shaped like buns need to be cut back. The other boxwood have no particular form. They simply send branches upwards. This spring they have got a lot of yellowing leaves as well. I realize I can't change growth habit but can make them look better and healthier.

with an evergreen.. and spring browning/yellowing .... my MI default is a hard winter.. NOT a soil amendment concern ...

so why think you need fert/amendments???

that said.. a little compost isnt going to hurt anything ...

ps: evergreen damage.. in regard to weather is either.. going into late fall in a lush growth phase.. and not hardening off properly to the reality of a fast winter.. or an early spring thaw .. followed by a deep re-freeze .... can you recall the weather back last fall????
