I have an area that I want to add some shrubs to. It is in part shade in the winter and full shade in the summer. There are also some trees nearby (a redbud, tulip poplar and some pines), so it is very dry as well. Part of the area needs to serve as screening, so I want something 4-6 feet tall. Also would prefer an evergreen, obviously. We have clay, acidic soil. Flowers and/or winter interest are a plus, but not required. Thanks!

Sounds like a spot for evergreen yews (Taxus species) since they will tolerate all of your requirements. 'Densiformis' might fill the bill as it gets to the height you are seeking. Yews do not like "wet feet" but will require normal watering for a couple of seasons to get them established. hortster

Anything faster growing? Yews are really slow, aren't they?

Sounds like a good location for sweet box, Sarcococca species. Very tolerant of dry shade, evergreen, very fragrant (but tiny) flowers produced in late winter and it grows faster than any yew I've ever encountered :-) Either S. ruscifolia or confusa will get the height you wish - the only significant difference between the two is color of the berries they produce. Aucuba japonica and English laurel (Prunus laurocerasus) are also very tolerant of dry shade but can grow much larger than you wish. And the aucuba flowering is insignificant.

My yews seem to grow fairly quickly. Granted, in a bit of an ugly way. It seems like each year, I'm trimmin 8-10" of new growth off.
