| I was just out in the yard and noticed that my Diablo Ninebarks have retained much of the infected foilage...just black crusty foilage everywhere. Its obvious that I will not win this battle.
Any suggestions for a replacement? A moderate to fast growing species is preferred. Needs to be tough...its a hot, gravely, dry location...yet it needs to be attractive. Meant to block the neighbors from our patio. 8' X 6' would be an ideal size. I'll be checking the conifers forum as well. |

| I had to return 5 gold diablo last year for the same reason. I'll be moving some other shrubs to that spot... probably red twig dogwood. Anyone know if powdery mildew is in the soil. |

| You get mildew when you plant susceptible plants in unsuitable locations like hot dry gravelly soil. Look for something that likes hot dry gravelly soil. It won't be a ninebark. Mildew blows around in the air, during suitable weather. Out here that time is when it is the most hot and dry of the year. Dry or damp leaves make the most suitable germination sites for the spores. Wet leaves are not suitable, that's why frequent washing can actually interfere with mildew. Re-moistening of the root zone resulting from spraying the leaves might help as well. You don't, of course want to do this late enough in the day that the plant will then remain damp all night. |

| Thats the magic question....what likes hot dry (slightly) gravelly soil? I can't get any hits in the conifer forum either. Diablo was a good choice as far as vigor...I just didn't know it was so suseptiable to PM...more so in dry conditions, which its supposedly tolerate of. |
