buddleia branches

I have 2 buddeias that are 12 years old but the branches are very spindly. I cut them back each spring to about a foot and the original branches they were planted with are much thicker.
I have seen other buddleias that have very thick branches all through the shrub. What could I do to increase their size? Should I not cut them back?

Can I ask the reason you want thick branches? Are they not flowering for you? Buddleja is a very scraggly shrub when left to its own devices and the annual cut back makes it much tidier. But with only one year's growth those branches are never going to get very thick.

in my z5 mi.. they all died within 3 years.. i can not believe.. yours have lasted 10 years ...

based on that.. i wouldnt complain they are alive ... your garden must be mystical ...
