Hedge how to fix it? Pics

I have this hedge in front of my house. I do not know what kind it is so that is my first problem lol. The hedge is really leggy. It is in front of a window so the top part of the hedge is full but the bottom part is like branches it looks dumb. I was going to just rip it all out and put something else there, but when I first moved here about 5 months ago I trimmed it a little and it looks like some of it is growing in at the bottom. Basically does anyone know what kind of bush this is... and if I hack it down a bit will it grow back or is it a lost cause. I have one of these on the side of the house and it is full from top to bottom. Thanks in advance... new at this! {{gwi:245150}}

i dont care what it is.. its ugly ...

IF IT WERE ME .... i would cut the whole thing to about 6 inches ... and give it a couple months ...

if it responds favorably .. it stays ...

if it is still irritating me .. its out of there ...

with so many options in life.. do you really need a renovation project???? in FL you can grow so many cool things.. why bother with the prior owners nightmare ...

if the first decision is it has to go.. prune it to about 2 feet ... then start digging.. using the 2 foot poles as assistance it digging it out ...

I just watched a video that shows the different options you have. It's linked below and seems like excellent advice. It basically repeats what Ken said but in video form. It's called "Fixing a Pruning Nightmare".
