I was just reading about male/female skimmias. How can I tell if mine is male or female? (I looked everywhere but don't see anything that looks familiar) Do I need one of each in order for the plant to grow? Can someone please educate me on this?

Full shade for skimmias. If you find the gender of the 'Marlot' mentioned somewhere that will answer the question for you*. Or, if it has berries on it then you will know it is female.

*Failing that, for some reason, male skimmia produce larger, fuller, conical heads, making them much more decorative in bloom than the female plants.

Thank you bboy. Okay, full shade. I am going to extend my perennial garden bed right around to the base of my window. That area faces north so it should get plenty of shade there.
Now, I shall go on a gender hunt to see if I can find out if I have a little boy or a little girl skimmia. lol

This is a male skimmia :-) Very showy in flower - much nicer than the female forms. And full shade is very appropriate - skimmias in much sun or too dry soil rapidly develop mites which cause the foliage to look very bleached out or chlorotic. The foliage should be a rich dark green.

Gardengal, thank you. I'll definitely plant it in the shade. It's good to know what the gender is. I never heard of plants having a gender. Boy, the things you learn. Yes, the foliage is a nice dark green.
