Hardy, pest-resilient, evergreen shrubs, 10-15' tall

| We have 26 hemlock trees that we have to destroy due to the woolly adelgid (we are heartbroken, to say the least). We would like to plant another evergreen privacy 'fence' that is hardy re: wind, sun, pests, and disease and will only grow 10-15' tall,6-8' wide and can grow in a sandy/alkaline soil. I am afraid we are looking for the impossible fix. However, we're hoping for suggestions. Help!! |

| Don't know about alkaline, but Viburnum pragense and Viburnum rhytidophyllum species and cultivars might work. And so would a great many conifers other than hemlocks. However, all would be wider than 6-8 feet, as are the hemlocks you must remove. |

We sheared them from the time we planted them, twenty-five years ago -
They actually are 20 - 25 feet tall and about 10 feet wide. We have had to use a bucket truck for the past 3 years to get the job done.
Since we have to remove them, we would prefer something more manageable (height, width, pest-resilient, etc.) - |

| Is it too warm in KY for Yew (Taxus)? You might also consider Plum Yew (Cephalotaxus). No need for named varieties, straight T. x media, T. cuspidata, and C. harringtonia will work fine. |

| Morella cerifera, wax myrtle fits EXACTLY what you want. It's really quite handsome/underused native shrub. Smells great too. |

| Thank you, oath5; we will definitely look into the wax myrtle. Thank you, smivie. Along with the viburnum from laceyvail, we added the yews to our list of possibilities. We are very appreciative of these suggestions. |

| Just a comment - if you have deer issues, yews seem to be the first thing they eat around here. I have few if any other deer problems, but yews end up as bare sticks. |

| Cephalotaxus cultivars, Plum Yews, are highly deer resistant. |

| nhbabs, we do have some deer issues. Thanks for the warning. We did not think of that possible problem. lacey, thank you for the suggestion. This will make it easier to decide what to plant. To my list of possibilities, we have added pros/cons for each plant/shrub. |

| Wax myrtle is, indeed, a beautiful native shrub; but is it cold hardy into Zone 6? |
