Ideas needed for privacy hedge

I am finally ready to being landscaping my yard this year and the first step is to create a privacy hedge along the west 150 and the north 250. My view is open to the east and south. Ideally I would like a long lived evergreen variety that I can shape for a few years and then just allow to grow naturally. I am planning on putting a row of trees inside the hedge and am leaning towards Russian olives since I love their smell and if the hedge has deep colors would contrast nicely (in my minds eye at least). I am listed as being in zone 5b but the temperatures here only get below zone 6a for maybe 1 night every 3 years or so and gets below 6b probably 3-4 nights per year. My overall plan for the yard is a large 30-40 foot koi pond in the center and mostly grasses and trees. I am open to keeping all of the boarding plants the same or alternating. Really looking for anything that will be fun interesting and unique. 6-20 feet in height and 5-10 width would be nice, I have really enjoyed reading through the posts on this forum and I am very excited to hear any of your suggestions.

Plant something you like and let it grow naturally from the start, instead of deforming it for some years beforehand. Regular shearing should either be kept up indefinitely or not started in the first place.

USDA Hardiness Zones are based on average annual minimum temperature ranges for specific 15 year periods. Therefore, there is no single figure attached to each zone. Expect occasional lows below the range associated with each zone. A Zone 6 location, for instance will at some point be liable to fall below -10 degrees F.

Try looking in the Sunset Western Garden Book. Many western gardeners have liked and used that for decades. There is a plant selection chapter near the front that has a section on screens and hedges.
