Pruning Cotoneaster

Hi, We have three cotoneaster's in the corner of our property. They are about 7 feet tall. They use to be dense at the bottom but are not now. If we prune them down a couple of feet will they fill out again or does anyone any any advice for us.

Thanks,
Bridget

What sort of Cotoneasters are they? Do you know? Some are naturally inclined to form small elegant multistemmed trees rather than bushy shrubs. Can you post a picture?

Often with these cutting individual branches back part way does not result in an attractive effect. You might just want to cut all of the stems down to low stumps, start them over again from that point.

Except for the stumps near their bases they will then have lower tops with more attractive natural branching. It may be quite some years before you will feel the need to repeat the procedure.

Now would be a good time, so they have the rest of the growing season to respond.

There will be no flowering or fruiting until re-growth has been present long enough.

If these are one of the locally weedy naturalized Cotoneaster species it might be as well to remove them and replace them with something else.
