New to Gardening- Gardenia Hedge help

Hi Guys,

I'm very new to gardening (moved into the house 2 weeks ago, started gardening today). I have a question regarding a gardenia hedge I have. One of these hedges has been infiltrated underneath by a vast amount of mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonicus - thanks google) and doesn't appear to be doing so well, although I have no idea if this is the reason. My question is this - do you think that the mondo grass will be doing the gardenias harm, or will it just be acting as a ground cover in there and not hurt much.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
