It's very easy to grow from cuttings stuck into pots of dirt. Much easier than rooting roses. I didn't know they would root in water.

And I'm sorry about your dog, I've been through that a couple of times, and it isn't easy, even though it's the only thing you can do. It's the last act of love for a beloved sick pet.

Wish I had some experience doing this one that way to offer... my instinct would be to put it in the ground gently, with something to shade it from mid-day rays (like a chair or little table) until you see some new growth on it, don't let it dry out but don't make a little pond. It might help to plant some little annuals flowers with it, maybe baby perennial of some small type, just to increase the chances of having "something good happen" from your efforts. Yes, I'd wait until it's warmer. That seems a bit cold.

I had to have a dog euthanized about 8 years ago, and still miss her. She was special, they only come along once in a great while. Take your time, getting over her loss, and you might want to wait a while before getting another one.
