| I have been trying to figure out what type of foundation shrub to use here for the past 14 years. We tried spreading yews, cherry laurel's and for the past 8 years, azaleas. The cherry laurel's got way too big and we had to move them. The yews stayed WAY too small and weren't even noticable. The azaleas looked pretty at first but hav bee so scraggly looking for the p ast 5 years even with pruning.
Here's a picture that shows the dark front of my house. It's full shade being on the north side of the house but is more like open shade. It's the area under the double window to the right of the door. After researching, I have narrowed it down to three (I prefer evergreens in this spot). (Please offer your experience and opinions): Pieris Japonica 'Cavatine'

| I have not had good experience with Leucothoe 'Rainbow'. Portions of it died off and the variegation didn't always hold. You did consider Gardenia (the one called radicans, not sure if it is a cultivar name or a species)? That has done well for me. |

| Pieris 'Cavatine' is one of my favorite shrubs. Very tidy mounding habit and excellent deep colored foliage. And produces an excellent spring bloom display. Looks great in or out of bloom. A dwarf skimmia would work very nicely as well and offer a light fragrance with their late winter bloom. I prefer the male selections - they seem to be more compact and with a better flower display, but you could do a mix of both males and females if you want berries. IME, skimmia requires a bit more attention, especially to light and water, to do well without problems. |
