We need to plant a shrub near the steps that lead to our front door. Any suggestions for something attractive? I guess it should be something with flowers (preferably fragrant), possibly evergreen and something we can keep down in height to 3-4 feet or so. The location gets a lot of sun for more than half the day but shade in the morning. This is for zone 6, in north NJ. Thx.

Carol Macke does fine here in zone 6b. The leaves are persistent through spring, and they look a little beaten up until the new growth comes. Then, oh lord, those fragrant flowers and pretty green and white leaves. It is a pretty slow grower. I've had mine for 10 years and it survived having a tree fall on it. If you can find Dirr, or if someone wants to provide the text to hgtvdream, he has a wonderful write up on daphnes. Something about "curling up their toes" Well worth the risk. A beautiful plant.

dang, I knew something was wrong with Ken's spelling, and I felt something was not right about mine. So there she is: "Carol Mackie"

Daphne's are considered short term shrubs. They are finicky and can up and die on you for no apparent reason. Just take this into consideration. You might consider evergreen Viburnum utile. Although it's May blooming white flowers are not fragrant, it's considered a pretty, and graceful plant. The 3 year + specimen at U. of Delaware Botanic Gardens is dense and 2' tall and as wide. Z 6-8.
