Hi, my husband loves the idea of planting a smokebush in our southern michigan yard, but I've got seasonal allergies... is a smoke bush a bad idea?...if so, any suggestions on how to compromise? Many thanks!

Even though you have allergies, that doesn't guarantee you'd react to smokebush. If you want to know for certain, see an allergist & get tested.

Also it is a member of the Sumac family and when handling it people can have reactions. There is a certain time of the summer you are supposed to cut them and they will not weep as bad. I think it is right after they bloom. I am sure you can google it for best time to prune and find out easily..

If you coppice or stool it annually - as many folks do with smokebush - to maintain a specified height and enhance foliage features, it will not bloom. No blooms = no pollen and no allergies.

As far as seasonal allergies go, most plants that cause problems are those that have wind-borne pollen, like grasses, ragweed, and many of the trees like maples, pines and oaks that bloom during the spring season. Plants that have more decorative flowers are more likely to be insect or bird pollenated, and I found several references to smoke trees attracting pollenating insects. So I can't answer to the skin reactions that hydraneasnohio mentioned, but you are probably safe with the smokebush not increasing your seasonal allergy problem.
