| I live in Louisiana (zone 9) and am looking for a fast growing hedge. I need one that likes full sun. I have found a few but they are pretty plain looking (no flowers/colors). I really like the Purple Leaf Plum Hedge but it is only hardy to zone 8. Has anyone tried growing this out of its zone? Can anyone suggest a "pretty" hedge that grows in zone 9? I am a newbie so any advice would be appreciated :) |

| The 'Krauter's Vesuvius' cultivar, which has better leaf color retention than some stock sold these days as 'Thundercloud' originated in California. So, I'm not sure it is not possible to grow these well in USDA 9. Maybe there is some other limiting factor where you are, besides the winter climate. |

| Both the above grow readily in west coast zone 10 (SoCal), so not sure why they couldn't work in your location.....other than much higher summer humidity which may encourage fungal issues. Purple-leaf sand cherry (Prunus x cistena) is another possibility and a smaller plant as well, perhaps a better choice for a hedge. Have you considered one of the purple/red leafed forms of Chinese fringe flower, Loropetalum? Pretty common landscape plant throughout the southeast. |

I love the look of the larger India Hawthornes, like 'Majestic Beauty' for example. Here's a description: Rhaphiolepis indica 'Majestic Beauty': As an accent, this sturdy hawthorne is striking when allowed to mature into a lovely ornamental tree. As an evergreen shrub, it excels as a living fence or as background for lower growing shrubs or perennials. In either case, it makes a nice specimen plant for the landscape. The leathery leaves are dark green on top and light green with a bronze fuzz on the underside. Fragrant pink to white flowers cover the plant prolifically in late to early summer. |
