 o
smoke bush (cotinus) slow to leaf out?

Hi folks -

I planted a 'Golden spirit' smoke bush in the fall and am eager for it to come to life again. Is this shrub typically late to leaf out? My garden is at the phase now where many shrubs are budding/opening, such as ninebark, dogwood, and viburnum. However my clethra (summersweet) is not budding yet - I know that clethra is usually the last to leaf out in the spring. My smoke bush is also doing nothing (yet). So do you think I killed it or is the smoke bush still waiting to bud? Thanks for any insights and opinions.

Barely even showing signs of life here and we're about 6 weeks ahead of you. Patience :-)

It's alive! Although the terminal buds look dead-ish, there are new buds growing off of the lower branches. Yay! I'll give it a couple weeks before deciding what parts are actually growing and what needs to get pruned. P.S. my clethra sprouted its first bud this week, too, so now I know that these two shrubs come alive around the same (late) time.
