Need your shrub suggestion to replace dwarf crapes

I sure need your input. I've looked through various books and haven't come up with a 4W x 4H shrub (even 4W x 5H) for a new perennial bed other than dwarf crapes. I'm in a hot, humid, and very sunny Zone 7 of VA. The bed gets full sun from the west and south. The new shrubs would be planted next to peonies, red barberries and red/yellow daylilies.

I was going to buy the Razzle Dazzle crapes, but feel uneasy buying them as gardeners posting on Garden Web said their plants have never bloomed. AARGH.

Well I have several dwarf razzles I bought last fall at lowes on clearance and I'm hoping they will bloom. As for shrub ideas, I like golden spirea and any abelia.

Not sure how you feel about roses, but the Knock-out roses can be kept pruned to the size you want, and bloom throughout the summer. I have the double red Knock-Outs picture below and also a Sunny Knock-Out that has a fragrance. I love them all.
