fertlilizing winterberry holly ...

ynot

Planted some Ilex verticillatas ("Red Sprite") last fall, along with a 'Jim Dandy' pollinator. I applied a small amount of fertilizer for acid-loving plants. Could someone tell me how often should these non-evergreen hollies be fertilized, if at all? Have heard and read so much that's contradictory... The fertilizing companies recommend feeding in both spring and fall. And then there are other various recommendations: spring only; fall only; slow-release; not slow-release; acid-loving; not acid-loving; and, finally, a recommendation for an annual application of compost covered with a mulch with no fertilizer needed. My sole goal is the health of the plant. FWIW, they're planted in pretty decent soil, get full sun, and are kept well-mulched with pine needles. They began leafing out about a week ago. All suggestions appreciated.
