 o
privacy hedge?

I have a corner lot that I want to put up a privacey hedge on one side for now(cause of expense) I talked to the local garden center they suggested either a red dog twig, cheyenne privet or a chinese lilac. I am looking for one that grows fast(cause of some circumstances with my property) I want it to be dense. I do have a dog and heard the first two have berries(want to be sure if they are safe) it is a sunny an partial shade from a walnut tree out there. I am in nw iowa where it gets very cold and lots of snow. I want to stop the city from filling my lot up with snow:( I am trying to decide between the first two. I was told they both grow fast and the redtwigdog would be full size by next winter. help please.

RE: privacy hedge?

Do you want privacy year-round? I'm not sure about chinese lilac, but the red twig dogwood is deciduous and will lose its foliage (and thus, privacy) in the winter. Privets keep their leaves down here in Oklahoma through the winter, but as far as I know they are semi-evergreen and probably would also lose foliage in Iowa.

I asked a similar question about a month ago, and someone suggested I look into bamboo for a fast growing, dense year-round screen. It might be worth looking into varieties for colder hardiness zones. There are a lot of other evergreen shrubs to choose from, but I'm not sure any of them would grow as fast as you want. Hollies are a great choice if you don't mind waiting a few years, and there are some varieties that don't have berries. Cypress might be an option too.

RE: privacy hedge?

Is there a boulevard with sidewalk between the hedge area and the street, or will the hedge go right near the street? Need to find out what are the restrictions regarding blocking an intersection vision - the city can give you guidance on how close the shrubs/trees can be to the corner. Lots of snow plowing, huh? Then salt tolerance will also be an issue.

There would be end of my yard the sidewalk than a grass(boulevard area)than the street. I was told I could plant up to the sidewalk. I dont want to(cause I would have to keep trimmed off walk) I also want low maintenance. I am alone with physical issues. There is probably salt there cause the city pushes the snow into my yard. Any suggestions? Privaey year round would be nice. All my trees lose there leaves except the evergreen tree I have. That I dont care for.
