| Along with the Baltimore rowhouse I recently acquired, I got a small front garden with some poor shrubs that have been pruned into small boxy or cylindrical shapes. They include some small boxwoods (not too bad), but also, what I think are some kind of yew and some kind of small laurel (Otto Lukyens?).
I'm working on a plan to redo the garden more to my taste...a more natural, less formal look (without the two badly trimmed topiraries, for example) and wonder if the shrubs are "reusable". Will they ever return to a somewhat natural shape? Is there anything special I should do in routine pruning to help them regain some dignity? |

| I have a rowhome too- in Canton, so no front yard, which sucks. The topiary formal look requires special pruning every year. If you just prune them like you would a normal shrub they will return to a more natural, less tacky look in a season or two. Another option is to take out everything and start from scratch with better, less over-used foundation plants. |
