Thuja Plicata 'Whipcord'

I bought two whipcords today and plan to put them in the front yard garden (full sun). But I was hoping to put three bushes in an area and with the two whipcords being so unique, I am finding it hard to decide what to plant with them. I plan to add hosta and heuchera nearby and around the grouping. I had originally planned to put two yellow barberries in the back with one burgundy barberry in front. (My house is red brick so the yellow will look better in the back). But now that my beloved hubby brought these home knowing I would fall in love with them, I have to change my plans. Another option is to place only one in the front and pair it/group it with two other plants. The other whipcord could go in the backyard. So what do you think? Any suggestions?

Climate? Soil? Exposure? You are right, such aberrant conifers will not blend well with other plants that are not also quite odd.

thuja are conifers.. there is a conifer forum where you might find many posts about thuja.. though i care not where you post ... any info.. an any thuja will be helpful ... the cultivar name isnt important ...

MOST conifers PREFER full sun .. and can tolerate some shade...

but the fact that you are going to plant hosta and heuchera nearby .. might indicate that it MIGHT be too shady ....

to counter ron .. ANYTHING that makes your toes curl.. in YOUR garden.. is just fine with me ... NOTHING is aberrant .. IF IT MAKES YOU HAPPY ...

shade is entirely subjective .... and hard to quantify on the web ... just plant them where you want.. and if they seem to not like the lack of sun in a few years.. we will move them then ... [they might get off color or sparse with needles ..]

just do what makes you happy ... odds are you arent going to kill them.. when all is said and done ....

ken

PS: and expect interior browning of older needles come this fall or next spring.. it is entirely normal for a recent transplant ...

I think I'd consider separating them :-) Two will make a much larger statement than a single plant and while I have seen them used as a hedge to great effect, I tend to agree that combining them with other, very different plants could prove challenging and even more so if used together. Combining with other dwarf conifers of unique habit may be one way to approach this.

Thuja plicata can tolerate a fair amount of shade so a part shade situation should work fine. And allow room for these guys to grow......while considered dwarfs, they get bigger than you might expect. A mature specimen at Iseli is about 5'x5'.

If you have the climate and site, I picture hebes, black mondo grass, other oddities - southern hemisphere stuff - rather than an Aberratum (weeping, dwarf, threadbranch, golden etc. conifer zoo).

I have one in my front foundation entryway in front of a Green Velvet boxwood and a globe blue spruce. I was hoping the quirky weeping Whipcord would soften and contrast the stiffer plants. That was the goal anyhow. It has been in 3-4 years now and its not doing anything for me. I'll try to get a picture posted.

one idea, but I'm not fully behind it:

Well, everyone, thank you. I think that pairing it with anything would be very difficult, although, I certainly see that the blue in the spruce and sheen of the boxwood looks very nice. I am going to take bboy's idea of grass behind it and then put at least one of them in front. It is full sun, no shade but I always plant hosta and heuchera in sun and they seem to do alright. I don't have shade and I love hosta and heuchera so I just test them out. They may not be as big as they would be in the shade, but they are happy enough. So that settles it...not going to pair anything with the plant it let it be the focal point. Thanks!
