What is this evergreen shrub and can I prune it?

I posted this on the "Name That Plant" forum before realizing there was one for shrubs!

I've inherited a yard that went completely untended for 20 years. These are growing along the entire back wall of our property:

I know they are supposed to be bushes (not trees!). My question is, does anyone know what they are and, more importantly, will they fill in if I prune them? They are severely top-heavy and I need to cut them back quite a bit, but they don't strike me as the type of bushes that will come back nicely if I do.

Any suggestions on how I might get them under control, or is my only option to tear them out and start with something new?

New Zealand Tea Tree (lepospermum), I'm fairly sure. I love it in spring until the flowers go away. After that, they are pretty nondescript,to my eye. I believe they are shrubs, but I prefer them trained into tree form. White or pink, they are gorgeous in spring.

Thanks so much! I was able to find lots of good information on the web now that I had the name. You're right, they're beautiful in the spring, but rather dull the rest of the year. Mine are dreadfully overgrown and top heavy, but I got some good tips on how (and how not) to prune them.

Thanks again!

There are some Leptospermum that are lower-growing, but most of the first introductions were the tree-type - 12-15ft ish. A lot of the exit ramps in the Bay Area are landscaped with the early types. Definitely not a specimen out of bloom and that one needs some more stuff around it - Pittosporum, Chaenomeles, etc. whatever is appropriate for wherever you live.
