Hello! I am looking for lilac recommendations. I would love a purple, very fragrant, somewhat contained (as in, not too large and sprawling) lilac bush in my front yard, which receives a lot of sunlight. Any recommendations? Fragrance is my highest priority. Thank you!

I have one with varigated leaves that has light purple flowers and is very fragrant. Can't remember the name but it is the only one out there with those leaves. So even when it's not blooming it still is attractive.

I would add that you should purchase "own-root" plants---not grafted ones. You'll be happy you did :-)

We just bought our 2nd lilac (somehow we killed that gorgeous picoteed one called Sensation years back) :0( This time we got a new cultivar which is supposedly recurrent. It's called Bloomerang. I think it's a Proven Winners selection. It is purple, size will be 4-5 feet tall and 4 feet wide. It is already starting to bloom in the pot, but we need to transplant it. I wanted something that would bloom for more than just a few weeks. We'll see! :0) Phyl |

I planted a bloomerang last summer and it is still only very small but wintered well and is full of buds. About 1 ft high. Looks nice and healthy . Survived -35 and colder.

Do you like the French lilacs, syringa vulgaris?? I know they get tall, about 8-12 ft. Sensation is one of the most beautiful s. vulgaris lilacs. If you like a purple French lilac may I recommend a dwarf one, Prairie Petite. It is zoned 2-7 & grows 3-4 ft tall & smelled wonderful. My sister & both purchased ones from SPI in Canada in 2006. I measured mine today & it is now 2 ft tall. This year it had 20 bloom spikes. If you can go a little taller SPI has semi-dwarf ones, Wonderblue & Yankee-Doodle that get 6-9 ft tall.
