Planting lilac near dead stump

Hi, I want to plant a lilac very near a dead elm stump. The stump is so rotten that I can fairly easily dig pieces out with a shovel.

I am wondering how much of the stump I have to remove for the lilac to be happy? I mean, if the rotting wood was one foot under soil, do you think the lilac would be fairly happy next to it?

Thanks!

BG
